18th Century Harvest Dinner

Graeme Park in Horsham, Montgomery County, reflects the significant influence of the British Isles on many eighteenth-century kitchens in Pennsylvania. That influence was also seen in many of the foods served at Graeme Park in the 1700s. Trade goods and seafood from Philadelphia were complemented by the foodstuffs acquired or grown at Graeme Park and its environs. This duality is also reflected in the following menu for a harvest dinner that was collected from local Bucks County records.

Pumpkin soup

Roast turkey or wild goose with cornbread, sausage, and apple stuffing

Fricassee of rabbit

Scalloped oysters

Corn pudding

Sweet potatoes with apples and nuts

Cranberry chutney

Creamed onions

Bread and butter

Apple, mince, and pumpkin pies

Raspberry fool

Cider, rum, beer, and wine
